RE: Full Timing

The RV Hometown web page has some good information.
I highly recommend attending a Life on Wheels conference. You'll get tons of good information and be able to talk with some fulltimers.
RV Dreams is another good website.
If you see links to blogs and web pages in the signiatures of other posters, go check them out. You'll find a wealth of good information.

RE: A Fork in the Road

I certainly hope that you will continue to moderate! I have always enjoyed reading your posts and taken to heart your sage advice.
It is wonderful that you are able to take care of your mother in her golden years. It's just another advantage of the fulltime lifestyle that you have been able to explore this great country of ours and have found a beautiful place to settle down. I looked up Donnelley on google maps and it looks like a gorgeous area.
Best wishes to you, Terry and your mother. I hope you have some acreage to accomodate all the RV's that will be visiting!

RE: What breed of dog is that?

The fun thing about having a Weimaraner is that most people know what the breed is, they just can't pronounce it! :B
Hey, is that a Weemanhomer? A Weimanhammer? A Weimanranner? A Weemoranner?

RE: Locating land?

Be sure to check with the county planning office wherever you decide to buy land to make sure it's legal to park and live in an RV. DO NOT believe the realtor. You should be able to find the county planner's phone number with a google search.
There are all sorts of possibilites in places you would never have thought of. For instance, in Lincoln county Oregon you can legally live in your RV from April to October if your property is on the 100-year flood plain.

RE: Dry, itchy skin on my lab

We had a lab who chewed himself raw. It turned out he was allergic to fleas. A topical flea treatment (like Top Spot or Advantix) solved the problem.

RE: Wow, this is sad.

I just waded through that whole thread and don't understand why people are reacting so negatively. :h It's a discussion fer cryin' out loud, not a censure.
Nowhere in that whole discussion does anyone say that personal topics should not be allowed.
This is JMHO but if you are so sensitive that you feel Walter's discussion is directed at you, then you might not be prepared for the comments you'll receive when you bare your soul on a public forum.

RE: To those I have offended, I apologize

I am shocked that there are people who seriously believe that Walter (dotldaddy) would try to censor or inhibit anyone from expressing themselves in any way. All you have to do is search for his previous posts to understand that this man hasn't a mean bone in his body.
It seems that any time poor Walter tries to open up a serious discussion he gets slammed. Remember the dog food wars? (hee hee)

RE: How many full-timers and full-timer wanna be's?

We are wanna-bees. Hopefully in another year, although I said that last year about this time.... :(
I feel your pain. We're in the same situation. We've been planning and working towards FT for 4 years and I was really, really hoping that '08 would be THE year. Unfortunately, the housing slump has really thrown a monkey wrench into our carfefully laid plans.

RE: from a recent e-mail

I remember having to wear dresses to school. In the winter the girls would wear flannel pants underneath our skirts so we wouldn't freeze to death. We'd take the pants off in the "cloakroom" and the boys would try to peek around the door.

RE: Dog paws

After one experience trying to remove a cholla ball from Jax's side, I bought a leatherman tool to carry with me.
We like to hike so I got one of those collapsible dog bowls and I carry extra water. If it's a long hike, Jax has a set of dog packs so he can carry his own water and snacks.

RE: Motorcycles and RV;s

We've been dirt biking and dualsporting for many years and I've been a die-hard Honda fan for all of them. This summer at the Black Dog Dualsport ride KTM had demo bikes. I rode the 450EXC and fell in love. The very next weekend we sold the Hondas and got our new KTMs.
I'm a woman so I've always been concerned about not being able to muscle a larger bike on a tight trail. I am amazed at the KTM. Extremely rideable and very light. And oh boy! Does it ever handle nice!
What I like best is that the larger engine allows me to keep up with traffic. My Honda CR250F would struggle at 55mph but with the KTM I just shift into 6th gear and turn the throttle.
Also, the KTM comes set up for the street. Mirrors, horn, winkies, and license plate holder are all stock. With the Hondas we had to get eline kits to make them street legal. The mirrors were always moving and there wasn't a horn.
We beefed up the frame on our Teton 5ver and put a 2-rail motorcycle carrier on the back. It works great.

RE: Full Timing and Health Insurance

We are not fulltiming yet, but our plan is to get an HSA with high deductible to cover anything catastrophic. We'll pay out of pocket for any small stuff. I've read that often you can get discounts by paying cash at the clinic or doctor's office.
We met one fulltiming couple who chose to not have any health insurance. They are aware of the risk and do their best to stay healthy. They do preventitive medicine and get their doctor appointments and dental work in Mexico. They also get prescriptions there.

RE: Full Time Fiver Suggestions

When considering which 5ver to purchase, please remember to keep in mind what tow vehicle you will be using. When we decided on Teton we knew we'd need a heavy duty tow vehicle. And it's not just pulling the rig to consider. Your TV has to have enough braking power to stop the rig, too.

Your adventure sounds fantastic. Good luck and be safe.

RE: Pet things we learn the hard way!

When your Mom visits, make sure she understands that a Weimaraner is very smart and sneaky and will counter-surf when no one is looking. It took a missing loaf of bread and later a chicken casserole before Mom finally understood what I was talking about.
A dog who is pissed off for being left home knows EXACTLY what to do to punish you. A shredded roll of paper towels takes a long time to clean up.
Never put the beautifully wrapped dog treats under the Christmas tree.

RE: So you still want ot go fulltime? Are you nuts?

If you can afford to live in a stick/brick, you can more than afford to live fulltime in a RV.
For us, and I think for a lot of others, fulltiming is the means to enable us to retire.
When we evaluated the possibility of retirement, we knew we would have to greatly downsize both our living space and extravagant lifestyle. While considering smaller houses, condos, etc. it occurred to us that we didn't want to sit in the same place every day looking out at the same view. (Thanks, Firedude, for your wonderful article). We wanted to be able travel but how to afford it while making rent/house payments?
Fulltiming was the perfect solution.

RE: Tough waiting!

I really feel your pain, too. We've been working towards fulltiming for 4 years. Like you, we got our truck in 2005 and our fiver in 2006. We've purchased all the things we think we'll need and upgraded the furniture in the Teton. We just finished remodeling the house to get it ready to put on the market. Unfortunately, there are several houses in our small, rural neighborhood that have been on the market for a year or more, so we are waiting until next spring to put out the 'for sale' sign.
We just got back from 5 days in Prospect, Oregon (near Crater Lake) and I almost cried when we pulled out of the RV park.
